Hurricane Matthew Update, Day 2

 In Reports

Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and generous donations in this challenging time.

At this time, we are happy to report that there was no damage to 5 of our partner schools and the Children’s Academy. As far as we know, all of our staff, students, Micah Scholars, and their families are safe and uninjured. We give thanks!

We know that there was damage to the homes of some Children’s Academy families, Micah Scholars, and families that are served by our church partners. We are also still waiting to hear from one of our partner schools on La Gonave, since it’s located in a region where cell service has not been restored. We are continuing to assess the impact so that we can determine the appropriate response in the days ahead.

Please continue to pray for and remember Haiti. Parts of the southern peninsula (where the damage may be greatest) are still cut off from contact. With many crops destroyed and significant flooding, we could see an increased threat of hunger and disease over the coming days and weeks. And finally, the 1st round of Presidential elections that was scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 9 have been postponed indefinitely (learn more here)

Please also pray for and remember the rest of the Caribbean, as well as Florida. Matthew will likely strike close to Vero Beach, where our US office is located, within the next 24 hours. Thanks to the help of very kind volunteers, John and Kent’s homes have been hardened against the storm.

Thank you for the incredible outpouring of support and encouragement over these last several days. While we’re still evaluating the situation, we know that in the coming days we will need to:

  • Support families in our network who have suffered damage to their homes and livelihoods.
  • Repair schools, social businesses, and churches we partner with.
  • Continue our efforts to build a stronger, more resilient Haiti through education.

We will continue to keep you updated as the situation unfolds. Our Facebook page will have the latest updates from the ground, including videos and photos.
