Kindergarten “Career Day” at The Children’s Academy

At The Children’s Academy we recently held a “Career Day,” though it wasn’t what you might expect. It was for our kindergarteners and their parents. See, in Haiti there’s a long-held expectation that if you’re in school, your goal has to be to become a doctor, engineer, lawyer, or, perhaps, a teacher. These are the careers associated with formal education and it really limits both students’ and parents’ expectations for the future.

The Children’s Academy “Career Day” was designed instead to open minds about what can be accomplished through education. Teachers met with parents in advance to make sure they understood the purpose of the event. Then the students, and many of their parents as well, came dressed up as their preferred profession. Finally, the kindergarteners gave little speeches in front of everyone about why they chose the profession they did. The event went great and we plan to do it again next year.

We wish we could tell you that things are improving in Haiti, but they’re not. Gangs continue to battle with police and citizen militias to take over more and more territory, and there’s no clear resolution in sight.

Despite this, for ordinary Haitians, like those we work with, life goes on. And, together, in solidarity, we’re doing everything we can to make the best of things and continue to pursue our mission, “to help Haitians change Haiti through education.”

On behalf of the students, families, and communities we serve in Haiti, thank you for your ongoing support.
