As a part of our entrepreneurship activities at The Children’s Academy, we recently started teaching the 9th and 10th graders how to make liquid dish/laundry detergent. This type of soap is typically imported from the Dominican Republic and is costly. The idea is for students to learn how to make it at the school, and then to send it home with them to be sold at market. Students’ families will then repay the school the wholesale price and pocket the retail profit for themselves.
While the details are still being worked out, this project is beneficial in several ways. Students learn a valuable skill, families receive a small source of much-needed income, and the school receives a small source of much-needed revenue.
Entrepreneurship activities like this are just one way that we work towards our mission, “to help Haitians change Haiti through education.” While making and selling detergent won’t fix Haiti’s myriad problems, it does teach students, families, and school staff one concrete way that they can be more self-sufficient – which is no small thing in rural Haiti.
On behalf of the students, families, and communities we serve in Haiti, thank you for your ongoing support.
