THE STORY OF HAITIAN SOUP JOUMOU, A.K.A. FREEDOM SOUP
Among my cherished Haitian family traditions is enjoying Soup Joumou on Sunday mornings. More than a delicious meal, it is a way to honor our ancestors who courageously fought and won freedom from their oppressors. It’s no wonder Haitians established Soup Joumou as their Independence Dish after proclaiming their freedom on January 1st, 1804 – it was the same dish they were forced to prepare yet not allowed to eat.
I’m honored to bring my Soup Joumou recipe to your table. Thank you and bon apeti as you enjoy this nourishing dish and celebrate unity, community, and the fundamental human right of freedom.
