Summary of Accomplishments 15 Years On

January 12, 2025 marked 15 years
since the Haiti earthquake

We provide this summary update so that our supporters can see for themselves, in short form, some of the key accomplishments they have made possible since the 2010 earthquake. For more details, we invite you to visit our Reports page.

 

It saddens us that the recent news from Haiti is so bleak. Nonetheless, as demonstrated here, good work is happening and, as an HP Board member recently expressed, “it’s in the dark that a candle burns brightest.” Your support will not only helps the most vulnerable, it will help them in their darkest hour. Thank you.

New Construction, Reconstruction & Repair

  • Built The Children’s Academy and Learning Center using earthquake and hurricane resistant construction. School opened in September 2012 and currently serves 504 students in 13 grades, providing  a quality, student-centered education
  • 3 Partner Schools completely rebuilt
  • 3 Partner Schools significantly repaired 
  • Helped students’ families on the isolated island of La Gonave to rebuild their homes after hurricane Matthew (2016)

Education

  • 5000+ students have received a high quality, locally relevant education
  • Improved the quality of education at all seven schools (Children’s Academy + six Partner Schools) through substantial trainings.
  • School-based community development model created at Children’s Academy combining high quality, student-centered education, parent engagement, permaculture gardening, entrepreneurship activities, women’s & children’s rights training, and more.
  • 50,000+ trees planted by students, parent volunteers, school staff, et al

Training

  • 6,000+: Total number of teachers, parents and community leaders trained since the 2010 earthquake
  • 1100: Total grassroots leaders, educators and local officials trained in democratic practice and participatory education 
  • 250: Number of residents trained at Habitat for Humanity Santo housing development to help them organize a community governance organization
  • Building the capacity of 40 community leaders in an intensive three year leadership development program

Community Building

  • 750,000+ volunteer service hours provided to support programming at Children’s Academy and operations in US
  • 1,000+ parents, teachers and community leaders have received substantial training in women’s and children’s rights, combating child servitude, HIV/AIDS prevention, and Village Savings and Loans programming 
  • 250+ jobs created and/or sustained
  • 4 social businesses launched
  • 8000+ people engaged in our mission to Help Haitians change Haiti through education by donating, events, traveling to Haiti with us, etc.
