Haiti’s President, Jovenel Moïse, assassinated overnight

 In General

Friends,

We hope that you and yours are healthy and well.

It breaks our hearts to share that Haiti’s President, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated early this morning by unidentified gunmen at his home in the hills above Port-au-Prince. We invite your thoughts and prayers for Haiti and her people.

Thank you to all of you who have reached out. We’ve been on the phone with people throughout the day. Haiti is in a state of emergency, but at present the colleagues, friends and family that we have news of are safe. For more details on the situation, we refer you to this Reuters article.

While we are deeply saddened by this news, we recommit ourselves to the mission that has animated our work since the beginning: to help Haitians change Haiti through education. We understand that real change takes time and must be led by Haitians themselves. We stand by all students, families and communities in Haiti committed to working together, peacefully and with mutual respect for all involved, towards a brighter future for the country.

We’re grateful beyond words for all your support and encouragement. We remain as committed as ever to providing children in Haiti with the education and learning experiences that will help them navigate challenges and opportunities and become the thoughtful leaders their country needs.

With love and gratitude,

Merline & John for Haiti Partners
