Language Hangouts

Language Hangouts

Language Hangouts connects a Haitian student with an English-speaking partner for the purpose of improving the Haitian student’s English skills and for the cultural enrichment of the English speaking volunteer. This is done virtually over the internet once a week at a regularly scheduled time. Students meet with their Hangout Partners online using a video conferencing program for 30 minutes each week for an 8-week session.

Volunteer Considerations

Commitment to an entire 8-week session. While we completely understand extenuating circumstances, it is extremely important that our volunteers are committed to a weekly regularly scheduled time slot. Haitian students often travel significant distances to participate in Language Hangouts and we want to be respectful of their commitment.


Patience is also a must for our volunteers. Haiti does not operate the way our countries do. Internet is sporadic and at times non-existent, travel to school can be difficult and numerous other unforeseen challenges may arise that could affect the flow of your Hangout Session.


A Background Check is required before proceeding with an application to become a volunteer due to the nature of the relationship between students and Hangout Partners. This is completed for US partners through a self-service website. Partners outside of the US will need to provide background checks as administered in their country.


Participants must be at least 18 years old. We can make exceptions with some conditions. Please contact us if you would like more information.


Language Hangouts are in Eastern Daylight Time Zone and conversation time spots are scheduled at your choice between the hours of 3:30pm and 5:00pm Monday through Friday.

Technical Requirements

  • High speed reliable internet connection is a must
  • Google Chrome must be installed and used as the browser for Hangout Sessions
  • WhatsApp mobile application is used for real-time communication throughout the sessions
  • Use of a laptop or PC that will NOT have security firewall in place (eg. school or corporate computers which may block access to Google Hangouts)
  • A Google email account is suggested but not required
  • Headphones are suggested

We’re sorry to tell you that the Language Hangouts program is currently on hold. Despite extraordinary efforts, we haven’t been able to establish a reliable enough internet connection at the Children’s Academy to make the program work. We will continue to pursue our provider in Haiti in the hopes of correcting this but, unfortunately, we cannot yet offer a date by which we expect this to be resolved.
