Character.org recognizes Home Gardens Project as “Promising Practice”
We are excited to share that Haiti Partners has been named a “Promising Practice” recipient by Character.org for our Home Gardens project at the Children’s Academy.
Character.org is a Washington D.C. based organization that has become a national leader and advocate for character development across the country and internationally. This year they have certified 170 “Promising Practices” to organizations and schools from across the United States as well as from Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines. Character.org’s mission is ” to provide the voice, visibility, and resources for educators to build nurturing and supportive school cultures that focus on core values and character strengths vital to student and school success. “We are extremely proud to recognize the schools and organizations that have developed and implemented a Promising Practice” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, President of Character.org. “Each of these programs and initiatives have demonstrated significant impact and strongly align with the principles that help schools and organizations cultivate a culture of character.”
The Home Gardens Project – “Konbit Jaden Lakay“ in Haitian Creole – was started in July 2020 as a long-term response to the economic upheaval and resulting increased food insecurity that COVID-19 is causing in Haiti. It addresses this by providing the families of all students and staff at the Children’s Academy with the materials and technical support they need to create and sustain their own permaculture home gardens. As a result, to date over 220 families (appx 1500 people) are being empowered to sustainably grow their own healthy food far into the future.
The Home Gardens Project also builds community and local investment because the families benefitting are not only receiving their own garden, they’re working together to plant other families’ gardens and build their water catchment systems as well. In this way, neighbors become invested in the welfare of each others’ gardens. Click here to learn more.
Haiti Partners is very grateful to be recognized in this way for this important work that is bringing such great benefits to students, families and other community members in the Children’s Academy school community.
