Two years ago, Esther St-Félix and her family lost everything. Displaced by violence in Haiti, they eventually found refuge in the neighborhood surrounding The Children’s Academy, where we welcomed them into our school community. Since then, Esther and her family have faced many challenges, and her story is one worth celebrating.
Esther is 15 years old and the third of five children. While preparing for Haiti’s official ninth-grade examination, she also endured the heartbreaking loss of her brother. Carrying deep grief and facing the uncertainty of displacement, she could easily have lost hope. Instead, she found the courage to continue, taking each day as it came and allowing her faith to guide her forward.
With careful preparation and encouragement from her school, Esther remained determined. In the midst of sorrow and uncertainty, she leaned on God, trusting Him to comfort her, restore her joy, and give her strength for the examination.
Her perseverance did not erase her grief; it revealed the quiet strength she discovered while carrying it.
When the results arrived, Esther had achieved more than many believed possible. She was proud not only of her excellent marks but also of the courage and perseverance that carried her through such a painful season. Her achievement became a testimony that difficult circumstances do not have to determine the end of our story.
Today, Esther is a 10th grade student at The Children’s Academy. Her story reminds us that faith, loving support, and determination can help young people overcome even the most difficult circumstances. That success can hold deeper meaning when it is achieved through hardship.
Looking ahead, Esther has a message for the next class of students: keep working hard so that we can continue achieving 100%. Our 100% success will not stop!
